Summary/Abstract: This submission is an integral part of a wider project, Bulgarian-European Cultural Dialogues, developed at the eponymous centre at New Bulgarian University. The study revolves around four Italian painters: Luigi Bolongaro, Cesare Drog, Giorgio Canella, and Antonio Canella. They taught painting at local high schools during the last decade of the 19th century and took an active part in the artistic developments in Bulgaria. The available biographical data has been concisely put together for the first time and newly discovered items are included. Some inconsistencies were ironed out regarding Luigi Bolongaro’s stay in Bulgaria and his involvement in the local art life. We ruled out hypotheses and performed a critical review of new documented personal and artistic details pertaining to Georgio Canella and Cesare Drog. The study is open to further additions and submissions by Bulgarian and Italian colleagues.
