Summary/Abstract: In the 1960s, theatre in Bulgaria was an exceptionally dynamic environment. Within the local scene, there were a few different generations of directors and set designers. The generational difference, combined with the rapidly changing political climate after the BCP’s Plenary Meeting of April 1957, has contributed towards the introduction of new visual aesthetics within the theatrical performances. This paper aims to investigate the various processes surrounding the relatively new for that period spatial concepts, since their introduction in the theatres of Burgas and Varna and their subsequent influence over the stages of Sofia. The paper describes some of the set design approaches from a few key performances, illustrating the radical change in the visual aesthetics of the the¬atrical performance, compared to previous periods. Compared are some of the trends and elements of the performances, which later had for years a significant impact on the Bulgarian stage.
