Summary/Abstract: This paper seeks to present examples of the processes of influence and interrelationships between painting and set design in the period 1944–1968. At the time, the imposed normative aesthetics of Socialist Realism extending across arts played a central role. The subject matter of all the works was identical and the devices to create such a work aimed solely to achieve realism, leading more often than not up a blind alley. Set designers’ output went beyond the stage alone as they worked also in the fields of painting, prints, illustration, design, mosaic design, decorative wall panels, stained glass, etc. Ivan Penkov, Asen Popov, Georgi Karakashev, Nikola Tuzsuzov, Preslav Kurshovski, among others, began their careers in the aforementioned genres, devoting no less efforts and yielding equally spectacular results.
