Summary/Abstract: Straipsnyje pristatoma religijos termino apibrėžties socialiniuose moksluose problematika ir iš to išplaukiančios teorinės implikacijos. Autoriai apžvelgia religijos ir pasaulio religijos konceptus, pabrėžia šių terminų sąlyginumą moksliniuose tyrinėjimuose. Antroje straipsnio dalyje imamasi analizuoti plačiai paplitusių idėjų ir formuluočių religijos atžvilgiu rinkinį, kuris kyla iš minėtos religijos apibrėžties ir marksistinės dialektikos taikymo religijos studijose. Autoriai teigia, jog neatsargiai ir nekritiškai taikant marksistinę dialektiką religijos tyrinėjimams kyla pavojus, kad religijos studijos kels tik tam tikrus pačiai marksistinei dialektikai aktualius ir tik jai būdingus klausimus, pateiks tik šiai teorinei prieičiai tinkamus atsakymus. In this article the authors discuss definitional problems of the concept of religion in social science and the consequent theoretical implications that follow if these problems are underestimated. The authors begin with the overview of historical development of the concept of religion and world religion. The article brings forward definitional problems with the concept of religion and questions the scientific value of the concept of world religion. In the second part of the article the authors discuss a set of predispositions and preconceived sociological, philosophical ideas on religion which spring from the Marxist dialectical approach. The authors analyse the limitations of this approach in studying religion and argues that if these problems are ignored, they may lead to theoretical constrains which predetermine the type of questions that can be asked and answers that can be formulated.
