Summary/Abstract: In 1979-1982 Alfonsas Motuzas was a student at Klaipėda Faculty of Lithuanian Conservatoire and studied in the orchestra conducting class under the guidance of A. Buika. In 1987-1991 he was a doctoral student at the Department of Folk Music Instruments of the E. Gnesin Pedagogical Institute in Moscow. In 1993 he defended a doctoral thesis in Humanities (Musicology) at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and in 2001 he defended Dr. Habil. in Humanities dissertation (Ethnology) at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. In 2004 Alfonsas Motuzas was awarded the academic title of Professor of Vytautas Magnus University. In 1975–1995 he was working at the Lithuanian Conservatoire (currently Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater). In 1995–1997 he lectured at Klaipėda University, and in 1997–2004 he was a lecturer at Telšiai Priest Seminary. From 1997 and until his death he was a Professor of Vytautas Magnus University and lectured at the Faculty of Catholic Theology. He was also a Professor at Vilnius St. Joseph Seminary in the years 2002 – 2010 and a Professor at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences in the years 2008–2018. In 1992-1995 Alfonsas Motuzas was a Senior Assistant at St. Antanas Collegium in Kretinga. In 1995, after the Collegium had been reformed into St. Antony Religious Sciences Institute of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Vytautas Magnus University, he became the Dean of this faculty and in 1996 -1997 held the office of Director of this Institute. In 2000-2010 he held the position of a senior researcher at Klaipeda University Institute of Musicology. In 2005 he became a Director of the Center of History of the Catholic Church of Lithuania at Vytautas Magnus University Faculty of Catholic Theology. Since 1992 he has been a Member of Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences, and in 2000–2004 held the position of a Chairperson at the Academy Klaipeda branch. Alfonsas Motuzas gave lectures at the universities of Toronto, Oslo, Vienna, Munich, Krakow, Lublin, Warsaw and St. Petersburg. He published more than fifteen books, a lot of research articles, conducted a supervision of PhD students in ethnology.
