Summary/Abstract: The International Music Festival “Sofia Music Weeks” was founded in 1970 with the aim of presenting works from all continents, periods and genres as well as familiarising Bulgarian audiences with new and rarely performed pieces. This diversity of the festival suggests a broad representation of various styles; yet, in its earliest editions contemporary music was presented rather in the form of proposals by performers. Since the mid-1980s, the programmes of the already established event have begun to include (as a result of special programme arrangements) works by the international and Bulgarian musical avant-garde featuring innovative pursuits and different aesthetics. Particularly interesting in terms of contemporary music was 1986, which marked its presence in conceptual terms. This article seeks to present the repertoire referring rather to “today’s” music of the most authoritative international festival held in Sofia during the said period. With no claims to being exhaustive, this paper focuses on some highlights in the period from 1986 to 1994. The selection of the events under consideration was made through the double prism of organisers’ intentions and evaluations of analysts.
