Summary/Abstract: Based on the material of Russian proverbs, the article explores the semantic qualities of the word 'love'. Love in proverbs is interpreted through visual and gustatory images. It is common to liken love to a person's physical condition, their state or symptoms of an illness. Associations with animals ('clean' and 'unclean') are frequent as well. Love is seen through the 'prism' of different actions (for example, the bride-seeing ceremony, engagement et al.). Typical characteristics of love are its valued nature, 'omnipotence', willingness to sacrifice, readiness to forgive, compassion et al.
