Summary/Abstract: The panpipe in contemporary musical life is of particular interest to research. This instrument of ancient origins was "rediscovered" in the second half of the 20th century. Today the panpipe is a solo instrument with a very rich sound, with an unmistakable timbre and advanced technical possibilities, in the Romanian space being included in the composition of traditional music groups and folk orchestras. It has been virtually taken over in all genres existing in contemporary musical culture, including rock and jazz music, etc. The article refers to the essential contribution, in this process, of panpipe makers who, since the 60s of the twentieth century, have radically perfected this instrument, giving it unforeseen technical and acoustic possibilities. Among the most important ones are the pioneers Liubomir Iorga and Petre Zaharia (Republic of Moldova, 1960–1970) and the followers of the tradition Grigore Covaliu (Republic of Moldova) and Ion Preda (father) and Ionut Preda (son) (Romania).
