Summary/Abstract: Present article is about important contributions of the Academician Gheorghe Mihoc in the development of the mathematical school in Romania. Professor Gh. Mihoc entered in the history of mathematics through his outstanding contri butions to probability theory and its applications; also he is the author of over 180 papers and studies. Mathematical Statistics Center was established in 1964, thanks to Professor Gheorghe Mihoc efforts, with the central section of probabilities of the Mathematics Institute of the Romanian Academy. Since 1997, the Center was named after its founder, and later, in 2001, it was united with the Institute of Applied Mathematics “Caius Iacob” and become the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics “Gheorghe Mihoc Caius Iacob” of the Romanian Academy. Professor Gh. contributed to the development of Romanian science, as member of the University of Bucharest: as head of the Department of Statistical Mathematics and Probabil ity theory, as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, between 1951–1960, Vice rector between 1960–1963 and rector between 1963 and 1968. He was director general of the Central Institute of Statistics today National Institute of Statistics and in 1955 was elected a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, and in 1963 member, becoming President of the Roma nian Academy from 1980 until the end of his life, year 1981.
