Summary/Abstract: One of the greatest botanists in the Republic of Mol dova, academician Alexandru Ciubotaru died on 26 April 2017. Academician Alexandru Ciubotaru, an outstanding representa tive of vegetal biology in the Republic of Moldova, was known, both at home and abroad, as an experienced researcher in the field of structural botanics and the founder of the cyto-embry ology school in his country. His scientific work was impressive: over 750 original studies and articles, syntheses, innovative pat ents, works in the history of botanics and 20 monographs (as a single author or in cooperation with others). At the same time, he was the specialist who (together with a team) contributed to the design and construction of the Chisinau Botan ical Gardens (Institute) of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. He was appreciated for his scientific and managerial activi ties during the years as a director of the Botanical Gardens in Chisinau (1964–1987; 1995–2006) and as a director of the famous „Nikita” State Botanical Gardens in Yalta – Crimea (1988–1995). Starting with 1990 he was an active presence in Romania, too, in the Botanical Gardens of Iasi and Bucharest, taking part in scientific reunions, doctoral boards, botanical trips to various regions of the country and as a member of editing committees of botanical reviews in Iasi and Bucharest. A scientist and an educator of high intellectual carriage, an outstanding rhetor and writer, a tireless researcher in the field of vegetal life, under all its aspects, academician Alexandru Ciubotaru has become now a portrait in the gallery of great men of science.
