Summary/Abstract: By changing the architecture of the cuticular complex the foreign deposits favor the installation of a phyllosphere with an unpredictable dynamic. The constituents of the phyllosphere interact with one another, with the cuticular complex and air pollutants; the changes that occur in the expansion of the phyllosphere and in its composition,in the chemical composition of the cuticle and of the epicuticular wax,are the main responsible factors for the timely senescence of the foliage and possible causes of defoliation occurring in full vegetation season. In other words, without obvious physiological suffering, without notice‑able histo-anatomical changes, the defoliations can also be caused by imbalances in the ecology of the phylloshpere and of the cuticular complex, to which we add the significant quantity of pollutant deposits. This paper represents a summary of the main results from the scientific flow of the research addressing the integrated study of the relationship phyllosphere – cuticular complex – air pollution.
