On the “import” of poetry and prose for children and youth into the Slovak cultural and value contexts in the years 1960 – 1990

Summary/Abstract: The study synthesizes the results of the research into the poetry and prose for children and youth that were translated into English in the period of communist totalitarianism (1960s –1980s). The translated works of the given period were reconstructed according to the following criteria: belonging to respective national literature; structure of translated works with respect tothe literary genres; thematic, ideological and value aspects of the translations; and, compatibility of the translations in the context of Slovak literary production. Heuristics, analytical interpretation and comparative research methods were applied. The research led to the following conclusions: 1. most books for children and youth were translated from Russian and Czech literatures, in addition to that, from the literature of the GDR and Bulgaria; 2. most translated literature was the stories from the lives of children, fairy tales and adventure fiction; 3. the most affected by the ideological bias were the translations of Russian, East German and Bulgarian literature; genre-wise they include the stories from the life of youth and the science-fiction, the least ideologically biased were the fairy tales and poetry; 4. genre structure of the translations for children and youth fulfilled, in relation to the original literary production, the following functions: amplifying – translations expanded and enriched the existing offer of the genres that had been well-developed in the local context (stories on the life of children, fairy tales, poetry and non-fiction), and, substitution-compensatory – they filled the gap in the genres that were absent in the original literary production (adventure fiction and science-fiction). The research results have contributed to the completion of the literary-historical picture of the life of literature for children and youth in Slovakia in the years 1960 – 1990.
