Summary/Abstract: There is no consistent opinion among researchers and instructors concerning the efficiency of utilizing students’ mother tongues in teaching foreign languages, and consequently there is no consensus on employing translation and interpreting as an educational tool in foreign language learning. The foreign language teacher is often faced with the choice of using or avoiding a student’s mother tongue, whether to include exercises containing translation and interpreting, and so on. Since the author considers translation and interpreting to be an effective pedagogical tool that not only develops the student’s communication and linguistic competences in the foreign language, but also develops the mother tongue’s communication competencies and skills, she considers it beneficial to take a closer look at this topic.
