Summary/Abstract: The transition from communism in Eastern Europe does not have many opponents, but it does have its dissenters. While they welcome the movement away from communism, seen as a deficient social system, they are critical of the course of the reform process. They believe this process has made many conditions even worse than before the onset of reforms. Mounting evidence shows that the transition is a failure, but critics of transition remain a minority among scholars dealing with transition issues. This special section of EEPS offers the first comprehensive attempt to present this dissenting view of post-communism.
