Summary/Abstract: The problem of hard and palatal phonemes of consonants was examined in the article. They are used to differentiate grammatical categories in modern Russian. In many cases this kind of opposition is the only way to differentiate grammatical categories, e.g.: нов — short form of adjective; новь — feminine noun; готов — short form of adjective; готовь — verb in the imperative mood.
