Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problem of the palatalization and non-palatalization of consonants in the position before the phoneme <e> in Modern Russian. As is generally known the position before the phoneme <e> is weak, that is, in this position hard consonants in native Russian words undergo palatalization. However, in loanwords and abbreviations something opposite takes place: in the position before the phoneme <e> hard consonants do not always undergo palatalization. It follows from the above observation that in the subsystem of loanwords and abbreviations in Modern Russian there appear oppositions between hard and palatal consonants.
