Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to trace in time some of the responses given by language scientists to a complex problem: the genres of the written press. The development and the diversity of the latter generated many a classification in journalism manuals, complex and yet unable to accurately provide clear categories, based on objective criteria. Looking at this conundrum from an exterior perspective and using their specific theoretical tools, language scientists provided models of describing written press genres both relevant and able to explain the evolution of the industry lately.
