Summary/Abstract: This paper represents an introduction to the reading of a volume about the use of la miseen-abyme in André Gide’s work. At least in the case of this particular author, psychoanalytic literary critics suggest that la mise-en-abyme – along with its typical effectsof temporal circularity, narcissist identification in the mirror, erasing of the boundariesbetween reality and fiction – is doubled by another phenomenon, what psychoanalystsname transference, which is, again, characterized by re-living, re-experiencing emotions, both pleasant and traumatic, generated at some past moment in the subject’s life
