Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the process of evolution of the present model of public prosecutor’s offices in Poland. Over the centuries the institution was taking different forms and principles; however, its major role remained essentially the same: to guarantee compliance with the law. The discussion of the institutional model and the public prosecutor’s role starts from medieval investigator courts, embraces the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as the period between World War I and World War II by eventually arriving at the solutions of the present time. Currently, the public prosecutor’s office system is not anchored in the Polish Constitution of 1997 – undoubtedly an important obstacle in proper implementation of the new legal provisions in connection to the separation of functions of the Minister of Justice and the Public Prosecutor General as of the establishment of the Office of the Public Prosecutor General on 31 March 2010.
