Summary/Abstract: R. Laukaitytė reviewed and evaluated Skirmantė Smilingytė-Žeimienė‘s monograph The Art of Lithuania‘s Churches in the First Half of the 20th Century, published in 2009.The reviewer emphasized that this work is the first special research dealing with the object of investigation as a whole, i.e. the author revealed conditions for the creation of religious art as well as presented characteristics of the existing cults and their reflection in the works of art. Numerous illustrations, which comprise reproductions of originals and photos of imitations, found in churches, give an opportunity for the reader to become a researcher himself / herself and verify the author‘s claims about the origins of paintings‘ and sculptures‘ plots. Moreover, the reader can also estimate their suggestiveness and emotional impact. The monograph, on the one hand, adds new colours to the cultural picture of the interwar Lithuania; on the other hand, it raises many questions which deal with little-known heritage of this period and tendencies of cultural development.
