Summary/Abstract: In the context of ever-increasing problems which affect the economic competitiveness of the most important area of regional cooperation, the European Union, numerous specialists are reserved regarding the future of this developmental model. Whereas Western European skeptics consider it necessary to resume a process discontinued by the onset of the Second World War – going back to the national economic planning – the Easterners are optimistic about the new stage of economic integration and regionalization.
