Summary/Abstract: The article is a shortened version of the introductory part of the grant study. It focuses on the social processes currently underway in the EU countries. These are the ageing of population, poverty and disadvantaged population groups within the labour market. Non-standard characteristics are present in the offi cial labour market of the EU countries. On one hand, it is the ageing of population and decreasing natality creating the lack of workforce. On the other hand, a signifi cant segment of productive workforce is excluded from the labour market. A part of the young and elderly population is often confronted with discrimination on the labour market associated with age, lack of required skills and race. There is a confl ict emerging on the labour market between the insuffi ciently accepted offer and unsaturated supply of qualifi ed workforce. This may eventually lead to the slowdown of economic growth and social discrimination causing the social system to overload.
