Summary/Abstract: Electronic and electric East African music is a dynamic phenomenon constantly shaped in the circulation of modern technologies, aesthetics, meanings and practices. These flows connect local groups of musicians and listeners – in this case from Malawi and Tanzania – with virtual spaces, imagined past or divinity. The article proposes a reversal of the figure of a perspective in favor of the concept of voices that better reflects the dynamic nature of the social circulation of sound. An example of such a circulation is a relation with Afro-American and Afro-Latin diasporas mediated by recordings with rhumbą, salsa and calypso. The other example is later success of hip-hop. The cases of remixing and amplifying related to the contemporary performance and reception of music exercise the relationship between global flows and the local production and practice of social identities through the sound.
