The Willwould Story

Summary/Abstract: The text illustrates, in a willingly simple, naive manner, how language structures, usually presented in a minimal context, sometimes entirely decontextualized, can be part of a discourse. Thus, linguistic valences are accessed in a communicative situation. The values of will and would – auxiliary, modal verbs, or both, plus their derivatives – acquire substance and relevance at all levels: phonetic, morpho-syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. Once the context has been provided, the learners can understand and analyze different linguistic patterns in a more realistic and motivated way. This text and the like may serve as alternatives to the wooden-language of grammar books.
