Cracking a Hard Nut: Preposition

Summary/Abstract: The paper offers an alternative to the analysis of a grammatical category that poses problems not only to second language learners, but to native speakers as well - prepositions. This alternative is provided by the cognitive framework. The most interesting thing about this approach is not the capturing of the prototypical sense of a polysemous item, but its concern to specify the nature of the semantic links, by using common, everyday cognitive conceptualizations of the objects and phenomena in the world and their interrelationships. It seems metaphor has an important role to play in helping people to make sense of the world, and the study of the metaphorical thinking may lead to the use of interpretative processes that belong to the greater domain of human cognition, a realm which is cross-disciplinary and more general..
