Summary/Abstract: Karlheinz Stockhausen was among the frst composers after the World War II who discovered the new for the 20th century parameter of the musical material, the place of the produced sound or, more generally, the musical space. The term functional spatial music (introduced by him) means music in which the parameter space has got form-making function in micro- and macro-scale. The numerous spatial works of Stockhausen – vocal, instrumental, vocal-instrumental, electronic and stages ones – require a new type of halls, the latest technology, excellent trained performers and sound producers and sound projectionists and they alter radically the habitual concert practice. The spatial music offers the listeners a new type of acoustic perception – more complex, more valuable, more differentiated – which helps unconditionally to develop new sensitiveness.
