Summary/Abstract: Anticipating the theme of ethnography in Russian literature of Bessarabia, this study examines the scientific approach in modern European studies and in the basic works of Russian scientists. Modern scholars from Moldova also have devoted a significant number of works considering Russian literature as a source of ethnographic information; on a comparative basis, a similar aspect is stipulated in the ethnic literature of Republic of Moldova, analyzing the elements of ethnic self-identification in Ukrainian, Jewish, Gypsy, Bulgarian and Gagauz fiction. The article analyzes the history of revealing folklore-ethnographic elements in the works of Russian and Moldavian writers in Russian literature in Bessarabia of 19th century. Famous Moldovan literary scholars describe in detail the ethnographic elements in the works of A. Veltman, A. Pushkin, A. Yatsimirsky. A special attention in the historiography of the issue is paid to the analysis of the works of Moldavian writers in Russian, describing the images and plots of Moldavian folklore. The process of creating this literature by two categories of writers is described: Moldavian writers, who also created works in Russian (brothers Alexander and Boleslav Hizhdeu, K. Stamati-Curya, B. P. Hashdeu) and Russian writers proper, whose lived and worked in Bessarabia (N. Herbanovsky).
