Summary/Abstract: This article presents Protestant Hebrew studies in the 16th and 17th centuries: study centres, their staffing, specificity in different centres (Wittenberg, Zürich, Geneva), Hebrew printing, exemplary Grammar (E. Lewit, S. Münster, Grammatica hebraica absoluttissima, Basel 1525) and Hebrew Dictionary (S. Münster, Dictionarium Hebraicum, Basel 1523), Protestant Hebrew studies in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where Hebrew studies mostly served the purpose of Bible translation into Polish. The Christians took advantage of Hebrew studies mainly in theological studies. However, they approached it with due care, sensing the threat of Judaisation of Christianity (Luther). It was the Reformed-Evangelical Hebrews studies that remained wide-open to the study of Jewish sources, and also made use of exegetical and extra-biblical sources. On the other hand, Catholic Hebrew studies focused mainly on obtaining the best possible version of the Hebrew Bible and its other ancient versions, which were published in the form of a polyglot Bible.
