Summary/Abstract: The article studies the discursive devices targeted at the legitimation ofpolitical authority and at its contestation by various social groups in the Romanian principalities, setting from this perspective the period of Phanariote rule, together with that of the transition to Phanariotism, against the background of the social practices and their multilayered cultural and ideological entanglements developed within the traditional Romanian society over the long run. Drawing insights from the literature devoted to the comparative study of discourses in different social and political settings, in order to elaborate an appropriate framework for understanding the local record in the field, and discovering the distinction between the public and the hidden discourses advanced by the actors involved as a privileged interpretative key in light of the peculiarities exhibited by the social context in view, it delineates the specific strategies employed by the representatives of princely power, as well as by the boyardom, the Church and the masses within the prevailing networks of power relations of the time, together with their characteristic intertwinements. A better understanding of Phanariote authoritarianism is expected to emerge by way of the approach thus advanced.
