Summary/Abstract: Family and family upbringing are an indispensable condition for the development of children. Taking into consideration the contemporary conditions of living characterized by a fast development and progress of science, technology, production, the accelerated pace of life and work, the role of family in the upbringing of children is becoming more and more important. It is necessary for family to follow closely the demands made on it by the society, and at the same time to make possible for the child a normal socio-economic stability and free development and progress in every respect. The Paper considers the functionality of family and its effect on the academic achievement of the student in the Croatian Language. Since family and its activity (family education) are an indispensable condition for the development of children, we have explained a functional family and its dimensions. Family types and their effect on the achievement of the student are also considered. In the practical part of the Paper we have analyzed the problem of the role of family and its functionality when it comes to the academic achievement of the student in the Croatian Language, which was assessed through the success in a test in the Croatian Language, the final grade in this subject, and the overall achievement of the student at the end of the previous academic year. The research has confirmed that the best achievement in the Croatian Language was scored by the students coming from balanced families, followed by the students whose families are rigidly cohesive, while the students from average families come at the end.
