Summary/Abstract: Competences are key to any occupation that an individual is engaged in requiring of him the relevant knowledge; skills and abilities. In the educational system, the notion of competence refers to the pedagogical competences of the teaching staff. Pedagogical competences make possible real and constant self-estimates, critical thinking about educational practice with the goal of improving it, trying to combine theory and practice, which undoubtedly contributes to the quality of employees in the educational system at all levels. The general aim of this research is to determine the views of students of pedagogy, pre-school education, classroom teaching and teaching directions about the importance of developing pedagogical competencies. For the purpose of the research one used the questionnaire „Scale of Teacher Competencies“ that examines five competences (Professional Knowledge and Interpersonal Skills, Fundamental Knowledge and Skills, Research and Creation of New Knowledge, Professional Values and Devotion to Work, and Educational Values Creativity/Creative Capacity). The questionnaire was applied to a sample of 151 students of pedagogy, pre-school education and class teaching at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Education in Mostar in 2016. The results of the ANOVA conducted for dependent samples indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in the views of students about the importance of the development of particular competences during education (p<.01). Students attach considerably greater importance to professional values and devotion to work (M = 3.67) than to the basic knowledge and skills, and the research and creation of new knowledge (M = 3.50). One also established statistically significant differences (p <0.5) in the views of students in the analyzed study groups.
