Participle Constructions in German and Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian Language

Summary/Abstract: Participle constructions in German as well as in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, are subject-less reduced clauses. They have the value of a sentence and, as such, take on the function of an attribute or adverbial. In the function of an adverbial, they can have different meanings and replace a subordinate clause with a finite verb form, which is replaced by a participle in the participle construction. The term ”satzwertig“, which is used when defining the form and function of these structures, determines them in the best way, which would mean that participle constructions are not subordinate clauses, but that they certainly have the value of a subordinate clause. The contrastive analysis, in which the German participle constructions were compared with their translation equivalents, was done on a literary translation corpus, while the illustrative examples of participle constructions were excerpted from the newspaper corpus.
