Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the importance of cooperation between the science and business environments and current changes in the functioning of higher education institutions, and as a result the formation of a new model, called the third generation university. Next, the role of universities in the innovation ecosystem as well as in the commercialization of research results is explained. The analysis of special purpose vehicle of universities in Poland and the potential of such solution to stimulate cooperation between the academic community and business was made.
