Summary/Abstract: The review of English literature concerning innovative activities in family businesses allows the author to identify three major factors influencing managerial decisions on investments in R&D: a) family governance rules (family ownership concentration vs board independence), b) a service – dominant focus orientation and stewardship culture as immanent qualities of family business organizational culture, c) the character of asectoral environment a business operates in. According to the literature and the author’s own observations family businesses seem to have a greater potential for the innovative activities than their non-family counterparts.
