Summary/Abstract: The idea of sustainable development has become an element of world economic strategies, economic prognoses and educational programmes. The term “sustainable development “ is often used by authors of advertisements. The mentioned idea, whose foundations are found in the report Our Common Future issued by the World Commission on Environment and Development, is identified with an economic development accompanied by the protection of the environment and respect for local traditions and culture. In all papers published by the UN it is said that the sustainable development is not possible without making investments in renewable sources of energy or solving demographic problems. These include uncontrolled birth rate observed in developing countries and a decline in the population of people in the productivity age in developed countries. Thus, any attempts to take steps so as to increase the birth rate in developed countries do not only result from economic calculations but from the implementation of the idea of sustainable development. However, no school books or other school publications which present the idea of sustainable development, mention any demographic problems.
