Summary/Abstract: The analysis presented in this paper is part of the on-going discussion concerning the role and forms of teaching Polish word order to foreigners. Our remarks stem from the problems and difficulties we encountered while preparing a textbook designed for teaching word order during PFL lessons. The first part of the article concerns selected methodological and practical issues, such as the relationship between written/spoken language and the linear order of utterances, the meta-language used for describing word order rules, as well as the difficulties connected with interpreting a given linear order as (un)acceptable, neuter or stylistically marked. We have also stressed the impact of linguistic interference on creating certain word order patterns. The second part of the paper provides practical teaching solutions, referring to each of the problems presented above.
