Problems of Plastic Folklore

Summary/Abstract: А crucial problem in the study of plastic folklore now is the working out of an adequate methodology to this specific subject. Several questions are to be posed in this aspect. First of all, а proper scholarly attitude should be set up towards plastic folklore, а one that would help us define its amplitude, contents and the entity of its ingredients. In other words, this reveals the need for а theory treating plastic folklore as а cultural subsystem within the frames of folk culture. Primacy is given to the drawing of the main principles and objective laws unifying most diverse elements into а systemic entity. There is а tendency of discussing preliminarily the artistic nature of this kind of folklore but it often leads to the underestimation of other characteristic features: sociological, mythological, semiotic, etc. The material cultural environment of the individual consists of artifacts so different in substance, semantics, social value, etc. that it is too hard to decide which of them are and which are not plastic folklore. Apparently, there is а need for typology of these forms. Studying the interrelations between norms, tradition and improvisation will help us avoid making so absolute the role of such criteria like collectivity and normativity, and affirm the existence of an individual style even for the most traditiona1 and conservative art activities.
