Summary/Abstract: Since the classical period, some debates on the definition of Tafsir have been made. One of the issues featured in the debates is associated with concept of the science in the definition. “What is meant by word of ‘science’?” and “Is Tafsir be able to meet the conditions required by ‘science’ concept?” Such questions still retains its freshness. In the contemporary period, with new and different perspectives, one of scholars who participated in the discussion is Ibn Âşûr. His assessments on this issue stands in an important place. The essay, which deal with the issue to be critically important for aforementioned issue to become a current issue again, and come up for discussion, and to supplement the discussion.
