Directions of family support and development of the foster care system

Summary/Abstract: In 1990s the interest in completely different approach to work with the family increased in Poland, what resulted in the passage of a new act on 9th of June 2011 which is applicable until today - the Act of supporting family and foster care system. This is the first act emphasizing in its title the significance of the family, proposing completely new and complementary approach to issues of helping and supporting family in raising children. It covers all aspects of help and support system of the family. The most import ant principle of the social work with the family is a child's welfare - its safety and ties with the biological family and by extension - working not only ,,for'' the family, but mainly ,,with'' family. The aim of social assistance and social worker is to give aid to the family in overcoming difficult life situations which they cannot cope with themselves. The foster care system should work so that family forms of foster care dominate the institutional custody and also child's residence outside the family has got only a temporary nature. By a new act of the law the legislator unambiguously focused on the primacy of the family and on its support in crisis situations.
