The Issue of Tolerance in the Perspective of the Family

Summary/Abstract: The term 'tolerance' often appears in the statements of politicians, teachers and educators. It means respect for the attitudes, statements and people that differ from commonly accepted values, beliefs and ways of life. We find that being tolerant is a fundamental dimension of  human functioning. We always, and especially today, meet with different ways of life resulting from migrations of people and rapid development of technology. Intolerance stems from prejudice expressed in attitudes such as hostility, anger and emotional approach to diversity. Their source is mostly ignorance of other people. Since the basic and most important attitudes are formed in childhood, family is the place where the attitude of tolerance is shaped.
