Summary/Abstract: The author considers the generation, structure and functions of culturology within the system of cultureinquiring sciences. He shows that the original ideas of culturology appeared and matured within different sciences, and that the understanding of its subject, objectives and methods was gradually developed. The main objective of culturology is the culturological cognition of cultural values, symbols and activities as a systemic unity. This is followed by others: 1) the comprehension of a cultural generation, functioning, modification and innovation; 2) the study of the different morphological levels and structures of culture and their interactions; 3) an explanation of the meaning of cultural functions, codes and symbols and their application to everyday practice; 4) the comprehension of the traditions and norms (law, morality, etiquette, sanctions etc), communicative systems, standards of religion and art, and cultural stereotypes characteristic of social-cultural organisms; 5) the cognition of every creative form of human activity, intellectual, artistic or other producing new cultural phenomena. The sphere of culturological cognition includes forms of individual creativity, works of art, philosophical and scientific works, etc, which have unique characteristics and therefore cause problems for culturological studies.
