Text-type specific lexis in Polish and German court rulings as a challenge for the translator

Summary/Abstract: The issues of legal text translation are reflected in court ruling translations.The purpose of this article is to present the nature of legal translation and to address thecharacteristic properties of Polish and German court rulings. This confrontative analysiscovers Polish and German rulings in civil and criminal cases. They come primarily from thepublication Wybór niemieckich i polskich dokumentów do ćwiczeń translacyjnych by J. Iluk andA. Kubacki. Great emphasis is placed on exploring concrete terminological issues encounteredby translators when translating such documents. Furthermore, the article introduces theissues of translatorial strategies used in legal text translations. The analysis shows that a legaltranslator must have at least basic knowledge of law and use parallel texts in his work.
