Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is a definition model used in an eighteenth-century dictionary, examined from the point of view of contemporary semantic theories and lexicographic assumptions. The analysis of Pierre Danet’s French and Latin dictionary, translated into Polish by Franciszek Kola, leads to the conclusion that its definitions comply with certain modern requirements, especially with regard to elaborating user-friendly dictionaries, which combine scientific information with common knowledge based on stereotypes and prefer the narrative and discursive model of definition with expanded modal and metatextual frameworks. It should also be noted that Danet and Kola’s dictionary is significant in the development of the Polish metalexicographic terminology. The results of the conducted research show that old dictionaries can be a source of theoretical and methodological inspiration for new concepts and models of semantic description.
