Summary/Abstract: Transferring of the symbolic meaning is a creative principle that has been applied in culture to convey existential questions since very early times. In the contemporary Slovak prose for children and youth, some authors apply it as they try to address the problems of people with disabilities. The study is focused on interpreting examples from earlier periods of literature and a novelette by Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol, in which the analysed principle is manifested. The principal objective of the study is, however, to analyse literary works of contemporary Slovak fiction for children and young adults written by Daniel Hevier and Jana Bodnárová. The authors significantly different in their use of literary language but both apply the principle of transferring symbolic meaning to create the story as an inspirational platform in which two groups of people – both intact and those with disabilities could live close to each other as a community.
