Summary/Abstract: The article pays homage to Romanian scientist and explorer Emil Racoviță (1868–1947). Having studied natural sciences in Sorbonne University in Paris, Racovitza was the only natural historian to take part in the Belgian Antarctic Exhibition (1897–1899). Upon returning from the expedition, he became a member of the Royal Geographical Society of Antwerp. His scientific merits led to his becoming a member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences in 1905. He is considered to be the founding father of speleology due to his intensive activity in this field.
