Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the issue of plurilingualism, which has resonated in the EFL discourse in Europe for more than a decade. It is one of the key strategic aims, promoted by the Council of Europe, to be implemented in educational practice in order to develop plurilingual and intercultural competences in pupils. Theoretical foundations of this didactic principle are outlined in a document titled Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and further specified by European Centre for Modern Languages. The aim of plurilingualism is not only to train learners to utilise foreign language in life situations but also develop in learner meta-linguistic skills that are instrumental in learning languages more efficiently.
