Summary/Abstract: Turkey possesses a great amount of accumulation of modern techniques, aesthetics, artists, and works on engraving art. One of the four departments of Sanayi’i Nefise Mektebi (School of Fine Arts) was “hakk” (engraving), which was founded in 1883. The process of academic education is over 130 years, even though it was non-continuous until 1930s. The development of engraving as an authentic art in Turkey is parallel to painting and sculpture. The artists, who were pioneers in Modern Turkish art, can be seen to have produced works in engraving, also. Our reference point for making this observation are artists and teachers who contributed to the development of Turkish engraving art, such as Aliye Berger, Sabri Berkel, Nurullah Berk, Bedri Rahmi, Ercüment Kalmık, Turgut Zaim, Cihat Burak, Fethi Karakaş, Fethi Kayaalp, Muammer Bakır, Mürşide İçmeli, Gündüz Gölönü, Mustafa Aslıer, Hayati Misman, Özer Kabaş, Devrim Erbil, Asım İşler, Fevzi Tüfekçi. Leaving out the artists who produced significant works in engraving field as well as oil painting technique and sculpting; and upon examining the engraving artists that carried out their artistic production with engraving techniques, Fethi Kayaalp appears to be a significant figure in these terms. 1923 Ezine born artist has also an esteemed career in education. The important points worth mentioning are paying attention to the international criteria of engraving on ethical terms as well as aesthetic terms, an approach based on principle, ideology, and effort.
