Summary/Abstract: For pragmatic and emotional reasons and for the purposes of creating a sense of national identity after the end of the war, there were moves to change the German names for places and streets. The repolonisation and polonisation of nomenclature was initially haphazard. The situation was clarified by the Commission for the Determination of Placenames which was convened on 6 January 1946. The cited sources present both the process of changing naming in the first years postwar and the motivations behind the creation of the new names and also the criteria which were applied when determining official names. In addition, the sources highlight the participation of residents in the creation of new names and the attachment to known „familiar” names.
