Summary/Abstract: This paper addresses contexts in which Negative Polarity Items occur in the English language. It points to the fact that certain NPIs are not equally acceptable in all downward entailing contexts, and it examines the solution provided by the members of the Groningen school of negative polarity (Hoeksema 1986, Kas 1993, Zwarts 1996, 1998, van der Wouden 1997).
