Summary/Abstract: Agnieszka Dauksza reinterprets the artistic practices of Maria Jarema inthe context of new materialism, primarily employing Louis Althusserand Catherine Malabou’s materialism of the encounter. She analyzes Jarema’s painting from the 1950s, showing the method of experimentallyconfronting non‑identicalforms on the surface of the image in terms of plasticizing social relations through the impact of art. The dependence of Jarema and artistic material establishes another, non‑representational, unrepresentative economy of transmission, and equates the positions ofagents – “human” (the artists) and “nonhuman” (material) – as diverse butequally material entities, and finally abolishes speculation concerning the source of their agency. Jarema’s art is not autonomous – it is exposedto interaction, creation of differences, as well as physical, plastic and affective displacement.
